A complete D&D 5e random encounter table for village scenes. Roll a d100 to pick a set, then roll a D8 to pick a scenario within that set — 800 unique D&D encounter scenarios in total. Every scenario is system-neutral and runs on either the 2014 Player's Handbook or the 2024 D&D revision. Pair each scenario with a stat block from our D&D monsters catalogue and you have a session-ready encounter in under a minute.

How to roll this table

  1. When the party enters a village, roll a d100.
  2. The d100 result picks one of 100 scenario sets below.
  3. Then roll a D8 to pick one of 8 scenarios inside that set.
  4. Read the scenario to your players and run the scene. Add a monster stat block if combat starts.

The D8 Village encounter table

  1. D8=1:A group of boys are playing in the street. They are playing with wooden swords. They are fighting with each other. A random encounter on the way to the next town after a long campaign.
  2. D8=2:A man is being attacked by rats. He is wearing a green robe, and can tell the PCs that he is a wizard, but he is not evil. He will ask the PCs for help.
  3. D8=3:A man is selling meat on the street. He says that it is delicious meat, but it smells terrible and no one wants to buy it from him.
  4. D8=4:The village's well has suddenly dried up, leaving the villagers with no source of water. It is discovered that a group of dwarves have been secretly mining for gems and accidentally caused the water source to run dry. The party must find a way to make a deal with the dwarves or help the villagers find a new water source.
  5. D8=5:A fisherman boasts about his latest catch.
  6. D8=6:A man is walking down the street, ranting about how he will soon be famous. He is up for being a jester at the local tavern and will be found entertaining the locals if players listen to him long enough.
  7. D8=7:Summer: Lush pastures attract a tribe of wandering centaurs, causing tension with the villagers over land use. A series of misunderstandings leads to heightened aggression. Players are asked to mediate and find a peaceful solution. Successfully brokered peace earns the favor of both centaurs and villagers, rewarding the adventurers with centaur-crafted archery equipment and wisdom scrolls.
  8. D8=8:The local blacksmith hammers away at a sword and welcomes conversation. He's eager to share tips and tales from his travels.

  1. D8=1:A woman is standing around in the village. She tells anyone who will listen about a strange cult that has recently taken up residence in the hills near the village. The cultists worship an ancient god of death and decay from before the time of men. They are led by a strange old man with strange eyes. Some say that he can cast spells like a wizard, but he never seems to need to rest or prepare for casting like a wizard does.
  2. D8=2:A group of 1d4+2 goblins are arguing over their next meal. One says they should keep the humans they have captured alive and eat them later, but the other says that they should kill them now because they smell bad and it's not right to keep them alive when they smell bad.
  3. D8=3:A sudden influx of giant rats overruns the village granary. These rats follow an unusually intelligent rat king, hinting at deeper, underground threats possibly linked to a malignant curse.
  4. D8=4:A woman named Gertrude has lost her cat in the woods near the village. She has been looking for her cat for two days now, and she is exhausted and close to giving up. She is wearing a cloak with a hood, and her eyes are puffy from crying. She's holding a lantern, which is flickering and almost close to burning out. She's wearing dirty boots and gloves, which are covered in mud and scratches from climbing trees. If players help her find her cat, she will reward them with a magic item worth between 10-20 GP.

  1. D8=1:A group of villagers approach the party, asking them to help them investigate a mysterious disappearance of a nearby village. If the party agrees, they find out it was actually a group of werewolves who kidnapped the villagers as food for their pack.
  2. D8=2:A group of villagers are gathered around a tree, chanting and praying for the tree to bear fruit. If the party helps them, the tree will miraculously bear fruit, but it will also awaken an ancient spirit that will demand a sacrifice in return.

One of the songs is about how great ale is and how bad water is compared to ale. Another song is about how great wine is compared to ale. Another song is about how great parties are compared to going to church on Sunday mornings. Another song is about how much money the Lord and Lady of the village are giving away at their dinner party compared to how much money the priest at the local church gives away in charity every month when he collects donations from his parishioners.
  7. D8=7:Players come across a group of bards playing music in the village square. If they listen, the bards will tell stories of past heroes and events that may prove useful to the party's quest.
  8. D8=8:A musician tunes their instrument.

  1. D8=1:A renowned artist's latest painting comes to life, including its monsters. Finding and stopping the artist to reseal the art is critical.
  2. D8=2:The town's herbalist has been experimenting with new herbs and potions, but one of her concoctions has caused strange and dangerous side effects. The party must retrieve the ingredient she used and find an antidote before it's too late.
  3. D8=3:A group of men are sitting in a bar, talking about a dangerous creature that is terrorizing the area. They will give the players some useful information about the creature and then ask them to defeat it for them.

Upon closer inspection, the players will notice that they are not human, but rather a group of disguised shape-shifting Fey folk. The leader of the troupe will offer to teach the players a few tricks in exchange for their help in defeating a rival troupe.

  1. D8=1:A large group of people are gathered around two wizards who were locked in the basement of the local Mage Guild because they were arguing to loudly about whether or not magic can be used by anyone, including animals.
  2. D8=2:The local herbalist has gone missing, last seen searching for rare ingredients in a dark forest. Her apprentice, worried about her master's fate, seeks help to brave the dangerous woods and find her.
  3. D8=3:A group of children are playing hide and seek in the local graveyard at night. If the players find them, they will tell them about a strange grave they found under a tree. The players can dig up the grave and find an ancient sword.
  4. D8=4:A group of children are playing a game of hide and seek, hiding behind trees and bushes.
  5. D8=5:A group of young women are walking down the street, laughing and chatting. They seem to be headed to the local tavern.
  6. D8=6:A well-respected merchant is looking for brave souls to escort a shipment of rare spices through a dangerous bog. He warns of bandits and creatures lurking in the shadows of the marshes.

Another song is about how much money the Lord and Lady of the village are giving away at their dinner party compared to how much money the priest at the local church gives away in charity every month when he collects donations from his parishioners.
  7. D8=7:A group of children are playing a game in the street. One of the children will shout: 'I'm king of the hill!' The other children will run up the street and away from him. The boy will chase them for a moment, then give up and return to his original position.
  8. D8=8:The players come across a group of stranded travelers who have been cursed to wander the forest forever. They ask for the players' help in finding the source of the curse and breaking it.

  1. D8=1:A group of traveling bards are singing and dancing outside the village tavern. They are looking for a place to perform for the night.
  2. D8=2:A man is walking down the street, ranting about how dangerous it has become to walk the streets at night. He will offer to escort players to their destination for a small fee if they will let him tag along.
  3. D8=3:A group of 1d4+2 goblins are arguing over their next meal. One says they should keep the humans they have captured alive and eat them later, but the other says that they should kill them now because they smell bad and it's not right to keep them alive when they smell bad
  4. D8=4:As you walk down the street, a man dressed in all black and with a hood covering his face passes you by. He looks at you and whispers, "The end is coming."

  1. D8=1:A man offers to sell the players pets. He has several large cages of birds, small mammals, reptiles and a cage of small, colorful monkeys.

  3. D8=3:A woman comes into town and tells the villagers that her baby was stolen by goblins while she was picking berries in the woods. She will not say where she was picking berries at, but she will say that she saw the goblins heading toward a cave in the nearby mountains.
  4. D8=4:A human ranger is working on starting a fire as he cooks a quick meal. It's not working very well, as the ranger doesn't seem to know what he's doing.
  5. D8=5:The local constable, John Wayne, walks up and introduces himself. He says the party is trespassing in the plains of the village on private property and he will arrest them. If players try to bribe him or talk to him, you can have him attempt to arrest the party.
  6. D8=6:A powerful wizard trapped a fire elemental in the village lantern, but it's growing unstable. The village needs help before it unleashes chaos.
  7. D8=7:A carpenter is building a new table for the inn.
  8. D8=8:A man named Adam is being attacked by a group of ghouls! The ghouls are working for the Witch of the Lantern Jaws! He is trying to warn people about her plans, but no one believes him.
