How Sorcerer spellcasting works
Sorcerers know the fewest spells of any caster but pair them with Metamagic, the class's defining feature. Every known spell is a long-term commitment. Casting uses Charisma and consumes both spell slots and Sorcery Points (which can convert to extra slots via Font of Magic).
How to pick Sorcerer spells
Metamagic shapes the spell list. Twinned Spell pushes you toward single-target buffs (Haste, Polymorph); Quicken pushes you toward action-economy combos; Subtle Spell pushes you toward control with no save manipulation. Pick the metamagic, then the spells.
Signature Sorcerer spells
Shield, Counterspell, Fireball, Haste, Polymorph, Quickened Scorching Ray. Draconic and Aberrant Mind Sorcerers get subclass bonus spells that shift the math.
Top Sorcerer Spell Picks by Tier
Editorially curated picks — not algorithmically sorted. Each rationale explains why this spell sits in the canonical Sorcerer loadout for that tier of play.
Tier 1 (Levels 1-4)
- Shield
Reaction AC bump that compounds with the Sorcerer's Constitution save proficiency from level 1.
- Magic Missile
Auto-hit ranged damage; Empowered Spell metamagic adds the canonical damage reroll.
- Mage Armor
Until the build can afford Bracers of Defense, Mage Armor is the AC bedrock for non-armor casters.
Tier 2 (Levels 5-10)
- Counterspell
Subtle Spell makes Counterspell castable while bound, gagged, or in a Silence aura.
- Fireball
Twinned doesn't apply (area spell), but Empowered and Heightened both push Fireball over the typical edge.
- Haste
Twinned Haste — one slot, two allies, two extra attacks each per turn for the minute.
- Polymorph
Twinned Polymorph turns two allies into CR-up beasts.
