Description
Nonflammable grease covers the ground in a 10-foot square centered on a point within range and turns it into Difficult Terrain for the duration. When the grease appears, each creature standing in its area must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or have the Prone condition. A creature that enters the area or ends its turn there must also succeed on that save or fall Prone.

Doungim Lore
School Fit
The Conjuration tradition is for casters who think one step ahead — a wall of fog before the ambush, a horse before the long ride, a familiar before the dungeon. Grease sits among the Conjurations on the strength of the spell places matter or creatures into the world that were not there before the cast. The 1st-level slot is the most-cast slot of tier 1 — Grease earns its place there or somewhere else.
Class Fit
- Sorcerer: Subtle Spell removes the verbal and somatic components; if Grease normally has both, Subtle lets the Sorcerer cast in chains or in a noble's parlor. The 60-foot range on Grease leaves room for the caster to stay in the back line.
- Wizard: At tier 1 Wizards have small prepared lists. Grease earns its place by either being always-relevant (Shield, Mage Armor) or by being the right answer to a known problem. At 60 feet, Grease stays usable from the caster's typical positioning.
Tactical play (Doungim editorial)
Cheap 1st-level area control. Dex save; on a fail, fall prone in a 10-ft square. One round of 'fall prone or waste your turn' is worth a 1st-level slot most of the time.
