Doungim Lore
School Fit
The Conjuration tradition is for casters who think one step ahead — a wall of fog before the ambush, a horse before the long ride, a familiar before the dungeon. The school tag on Fog Cloud is obvious from the effect — the spell places matter or creatures into the world that were not there before the cast. At level 1, Fog Cloud is affordable in any caster's daily plan.
Class Fit
- Druid: Circle of the Moon Druids spend most of their turns in Wild Shape — Fog Cloud earns its slot only if the build expects to cast in humanoid form. Keep in mind that Fog Cloud ends the moment the caster takes concentration off it for any reason.
- Ranger: Rangers know a fixed list. Fog Cloud stays on the sheet for years once taken, so the pick is a long-term build decision. The higher-level scaling on Fog Cloud is described in the spell text; check it before upcasting.
- Sorcerer: Subtle Spell removes the verbal and somatic components; if Fog Cloud normally has both, Subtle lets the Sorcerer cast in chains or in a noble's parlor. 120 feet is enough range that Fog Cloud doesn't pull the caster forward.
- Wizard: Arcane Recovery returns one or two slots on a short rest. Fog Cloud's slot cost is therefore not exactly what the slot column says. The 120-foot range on Fog Cloud leaves room for the caster to stay in the back line.
