D&D 5e Level 1 Spells
All 57 D&D 5e level 1 spells. To cast one you need a level 1 spell slot or higher. Many lower-level spells scale up when cast from a higher slot — check each spell page for the "At Higher Levels" rule.
What level 1 spells do
Level 1 D&D 5e spells are the workhorses of tier-1 play. Every full caster starts with two and gains more by level 2. They cost a 1st-level spell slot and almost every spell at this tier has clear upcast scaling.
How to pick level 1 spells
Level 1 is where build identity gets locked in. Shield, Magic Missile, Healing Word, Bless, Sleep, Faerie Fire, Burning Hands, Hex — these are the spells that define how your character plays in the first ten sessions.
Tier expectations at level 1 spells
Pick level 1 spells that scale via upcasting (Hex, Hunter's Mark, Cure Wounds, Healing Word, Magic Missile) rather than spells that are static at level 1. Slot budgets shift as you climb, but a spell that upcasts well stays useful at tier 3.
