Description
Grasping plants sprout from the ground in a 20-foot square within range. For the duration, these plants turn the ground in the area into Difficult Terrain. They disappear when the spell ends. Each creature (other than you) in the area when you cast the spell must succeed on a Strength saving throw or have the Restrained condition until the spell ends. A Restrained creature can take an action to make a Strength (Athletics) check against your spell save DC. On a success, it frees itself from the grasping plants and is no longer Restrained by them.

Conjuration spells are creation magic in the loose sense — not creation from nothing, but creation from elsewhere. They borrow a creature from the planes or a body of water from a far lake. On the school axis, Entangle is Conjuration: the spell places matter or creatures into the world that were not there before the cast. The 1st-level slot is the most-cast slot of tier 1 — Entangle earns its place there or somewhere else.
Class Fit
- Druid: At tier 2, Druids juggle Pass Without Trace, Conjure Animals, and Spike Growth for concentration; Entangle fits in if it doesn't compete. As a concentration spell, Entangle occupies the caster's single concentration slot.
- Ranger: Rangers expect Pass Without Trace to be prepared most of tier 1 and tier 2; Entangle earns its place around that constant. 90 feet is enough range that Entangle doesn't pull the caster forward.
