How encounter difficulty is calculated

Each monster contributes its Challenge Rating XP value. The total raw XP is multiplied by a factor that depends on the number of monsters in the encounter — two monsters is ×1.5, three to six monsters is ×2, and so on. The adjusted XP is compared against the party's total threshold (per-character threshold × party size) for each tier. The DMG explicitly notes this is a rough guide; high-CR single monsters often play harder than the math suggests, and groups of low-CR monsters often play easier.
