How Warlock spellcasting works
Warlocks recover their spell slots on a short rest, but only have one or two slots until tier 3. Every slot casts at the maximum slot level (Pact Magic), making upcasting automatic. Casting uses Charisma and is constrained more by the number of slots than by spell-level math.
How to pick Warlock spells
Always-at-highest-level slots make spells with strong upcasting (Hex, Eldritch Blast cantrip, Hold Person, Banishment) particularly valuable. Pact of the Tome Warlocks gain bonus cantrips; Pact of the Chain Warlocks lean on the familiar's actions.
Signature Warlock spells
Eldritch Blast (cantrip backbone), Hex, Counterspell (Hexblade pick), Misty Step, Banishment, Hold Monster. The class's signature damage is the cantrip, not the spell list.
