Description

You gain the Invisible condition at the same time that an illusory double of you appears where you are standing. The double lasts for the duration, but the invisibility ends immediately after you make an attack roll, deal damage, or cast a spell. As a Magic action, you can move the illusory double up to twice your Speed and make it gesture, speak, and behave in whatever way you choose. It is intangible and invulnerable. You can see through its eyes and hear through its ears as if you were located where it is.

School Fit

The school of Illusion is the school of plausibility. A successful illusion is one the target's brain accepts; the spell does not pay the cost of disbelief. Mislead reads as Illusion the moment you see the effect — the spell creates a perceptual fiction the target's senses report as real. At level 5, the slot economy tightens — Mislead competes with the strongest spells in the band.

Class Fit

  • Bard: For a Bard, Mislead is best paired with another spell using the same target on the same turn — Bonus-Action plus Action layering is where the class wins fights. Concentration on Mislead forces the caster to choose between this spell and the next big concentration play.
  • Warlock: Invocations cover a lot of utility a Warlock would otherwise spell-cast. Mislead earns its slot when invocations don't cover the same need. Keep in mind that Mislead ends the moment the caster takes concentration off it for any reason.
  • Wizard: Arcane Recovery returns one or two slots on a short rest. Mislead's slot cost is therefore not exactly what the slot column says. Mislead's concentration requirement makes it vulnerable to a single failed save when the caster takes damage.
