Doungim Lore
School Fit
Misty Step is Conjuration's defining bonus-action cantrip — except it isn't a cantrip; it's a 2nd-level spell, and that's the cost. A Bonus Action, no concentration, and the caster teleports up to 30 feet to a square they can see. Conjuration is the school of moving matter and creatures through space, and Misty Step is the personal-scale instance of that principle.
Class Fit
- Sorcerer: Sorcerers know few spells, but Misty Step is almost always one of them by level 3. Quickened Spell doesn't apply (already a Bonus Action), but Twinned Spell does — the caster can teleport themselves and an ally with one slot. The two-target version of Misty Step is the Sorcerer's signature party-saving play in the right encounter.
- Warlock: Most Warlock builds prepare Misty Step the level it becomes available. Pact Magic always-at-highest slot doesn't penalize Misty Step the way it does some lower-level spells — Misty Step is the same effect at level 2 or level 5, but it's free to cast on the highest slot count.
- Wizard: Wizards add Misty Step to the spellbook and prep it almost daily through tier 2. The 2nd-level slot is abundant enough by character level 5 that casting Misty Step once or twice per encounter is sustainable. It pairs cleanly with the Wizard's Shield reaction: teleport away from a melee opponent, then prep Shield for the inevitable opportunity attack.
Tactical play (Doungim editorial)
Bonus-action teleport 30 feet. Use it (a) to escape grapples, (b) to reach a high spot the party can't otherwise climb, (c) to deny opportunity attacks on your way out of melee. The 30-foot limit matters — measure before you cast. Combine with War Caster on melee casters: Misty Step out of melee, then attack with a touch-range spell from the new position.
