School Fit
Conjuration spells are creation magic in the loose sense — not creation from nothing, but creation from elsewhere. They borrow a creature from the planes or a body of water from a far lake. Ice Knife sits among the Conjurations on the strength of the spell places matter or creatures into the world that were not there before the cast. The 1st-level slot is the most-cast slot of tier 1 — Ice Knife earns its place there or somewhere else.
Class Fit
- Druid: At tier 2, Druids juggle Pass Without Trace, Conjure Animals, and Spike Growth for concentration; Ice Knife fits in if it doesn't compete. Ice Knife reaches 60 feet, which lets the caster stay clear of the front line.
- Sorcerer: At tier 1 a Sorcerer's known-spell budget is brutal. Ice Knife earns its slot only if the build cannot win the next ten sessions without it. Upcasting Ice Knife changes the effect; the spell page lists the per-slot scaling.
- Wizard: Arcane Recovery returns one or two slots on a short rest. Ice Knife's slot cost is therefore not exactly what the slot column says. The 60-foot range on Ice Knife leaves room for the caster to stay in the back line.
