School Fit
Transmutation is the most flexible school. The same Polymorph that turns a hostile giant into a sheep can turn the party rogue into a giant ape three rounds later. Water Breathing is Transmutation because the spell rewrites a property of a body, an object, or terrain. At level 3, daily slot counts allow Water Breathing to be cast multiple times across the adventuring day.
Class Fit
- Druid: At tier 2, Druids juggle Pass Without Trace, Conjure Animals, and Spike Growth for concentration; Water Breathing fits in if it doesn't compete. At 30 feet, Water Breathing stays usable from the caster's typical positioning.
- Ranger: On a Ranger sheet, Water Breathing competes with Hunter's Mark and Favored Foe for concentration time. 30 feet is enough range that Water Breathing doesn't pull the caster forward.
- Sorcerer: Twin Spell turns single-target spells into two-target spells; if Water Breathing is single-target, Twin doubles its value. The 30-foot range on Water Breathing leaves room for the caster to stay in the back line.
- Wizard: Tier 3 and tier 4 Wizards add 5th-9th level spells to the book — Water Breathing interacts with those upper-tier picks as part of a full prep loadout. Water Breathing reaches 30 feet, which lets the caster stay clear of the front line.
