What level 3 spells do
Level 3 D&D 5e spells unlock at character level 5 and mark the shift from tier 1 to tier 2 play. Fireball, Counterspell, Fly, Haste, Lightning Bolt, Revivify — these are the spells that define mid-game power.
How to pick level 3 spells
How to pick level 3 spells: every full caster wants Counterspell (the 'no' button) and at least one damage spell or one buff. Concentration competition is fierce — Haste, Fly, Hypnotic Pattern, Spirit Guardians, and Slow all want the same channel.
Tier expectations at level 3 spells
Tier 2 expectations: level 3 spells set the bar for what counts as 'big damage' (8d6 Fireball, 8d6 Lightning Bolt) and what counts as 'encounter-changing' (Hypnotic Pattern, Spirit Guardians). Below this bar, the spell is filler.
