Description

You send a short message of 25 words or fewer to a creature you have met or a creature described to you by someone who has met it. The target hears the message in its mind, recognizes you as the sender if it knows you, and can answer in a like manner immediately. The spell enables targets to understand the meaning of your message. You can send the message across any distance and even to other planes of existence, but if the target is on a different plane than you, there is a 5 percent chance that the message doesn't arrive. You know if the delivery fails. Upon receiving your message, a creature can block your ability to reach it again with this spell for 8 hours. If you try to send another message during that time, you learn that you are blocked, and the spell fails.

School Fit

The Divination tradition's defining feature is access — to other places, other times, other minds. It is the most invasive school of magic and the least violent. What makes Sending Divination is the spell answers a question the caster could not otherwise reach. At level 3, Sending sits in the mid-tier slot competition.

Class Fit

  • Bard: A Bard prepares Sending from the known list, which means it stays on the sheet for several levels of play before retraining is an option. Sending reaches Unlimited, which lets the caster stay clear of the front line.
  • Cleric: Tempest, Tempest, and Light Domain Clerics get bonus damage spells; their identity shifts when Sending is or isn't part of that pool. At Unlimited, Sending stays usable from the caster's typical positioning.
  • Wizard: Once Sending is in the spellbook the cost is gold-and-ritual-time at acquisition; from then on the daily prep decision is free. Unlimited is enough range that Sending doesn't pull the caster forward.

Tactical play (Doungim editorial)

Send 25 words to a known creature anywhere on the same plane. They get an instant 25-word reply. The 25-word constraint is the game's best roleplay tool.
