Description

You point toward a creature within range and whisper a message. The target (and only the target) hears the message and can reply in a whisper that only you can hear. You can cast this spell through solid objects if you are familiar with the target and know it is beyond the barrier. Magical silence; 1 foot of stone, metal, or wood; or a thin sheet of lead blocks the spell.

5e (2014) vs 2024 changes

This spell has both a 5e (2014) and 2024 Player's Handbook version. Doungim shows the current 2024 stat block above. Differences between editions typically affect components, range, or scaling — check both source books for the table.

Doungim Lore

School Fit

The Transmutation tradition is the school of properties. A spell does not move the target; it changes what the target is. The school tag on Message is earned by the spell rewrites a property of a body, an object, or terrain. Cantrips like Message scale with character level, not slot cost.

Class Fit

  • Bard: College of Lore Bards have the easiest case for Message: Magical Secrets means the class can reach outside the standard list to grab adjacent picks. At 120 feet, Message stays usable from the caster's typical positioning.
  • Druid: Land Druids gain bonus circle spells by terrain; if Message is already on the chosen terrain list, save the manual prep slot for something else. Message reaches 120 feet, which lets the caster stay clear of the front line.
  • Sorcerer: Sorcerers know very few spells. Message is a permanent decision — the spell stays on the sheet unless the Sorcerer pays a level-up swap. 120 feet is enough range that Message doesn't pull the caster forward.
  • Wizard: Once Message is in the spellbook the cost is gold-and-ritual-time at acquisition; from then on the daily prep decision is free. At 120 feet, Message stays usable from the caster's typical positioning.
