Description

This spell repairs a single break or tear in an object you touch, such as a broken chain link, two halves of a broken key, a torn cloak, or a leaking wineskin. As long as the break or tear is no larger than 1 foot in any dimension, you mend it, leaving no trace of the former damage. This spell can physically repair a magic item, but it can't restore magic to such an object.

This spell has both a 5e (2014) and 2024 Player's Handbook version. Doungim shows the current 2024 stat block above. Differences between editions typically affect components, range, or scaling — check both source books for the table.

Doungim Lore

School Fit

Transmutation is the school of change. Its spells turn one thing into another, alter the rules of an object, or rewrite the parameters of a body. Mending is Transmutation because the spell rewrites a property of a body, an object, or terrain. As a cantrip, Mending stays on-tier at every level of play.

Class Fit

  • Bard: On a Bard sheet, Mending competes with Counterspell, Greater Invisibility, and Polymorph for known-spell budget. Pick it when those don't fit the day's planned arc.
  • Cleric: Wisdom is the Cleric's casting stat, and the DC scales with proficiency bonus plus Wis modifier — Mending is castable at the Cleric's normal DC.
  • Druid: At tier 2, Druids juggle Pass Without Trace, Conjure Animals, and Spike Growth for concentration; Mending fits in if it doesn't compete.
  • Sorcerer: Twin Spell turns single-target spells into two-target spells; if Mending is single-target, Twin doubles its value.
  • Wizard: The Wizard's daily prep list is the class's flexibility lever — every long rest is a chance to reconsider what Mending is doing on the sheet.
