Description

You create a wall of fire on a solid surface within range. You can make the wall up to 60 feet long, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick, or a ringed wall up to 20 feet in diameter, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick. The wall is opaque and lasts for the duration. When the wall appears, each creature in its area makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 5d8 Fire damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one. One side of the wall, selected by you when you cast this spell, deals 5d8 Fire damage to each creature that ends its turn within 10 feet of that side or inside the wall. A creature takes the same damage when it enters the wall for the first time on a turn or ends its turn there. The other side of the wall deals no damage.

At Higher Levels: The damage increases by 1d8 for each spell slot level above 4.

Doungim Lore

School Fit

Evocations are the most cinematic spells. They make a sound, they make a colour, they leave a scorch mark on the wall. Wall of Fire is Evocation: the spell focuses magical energy into a visible, immediate effect. Casting Wall of Fire at level 4 means giving up another high-value spell that turn — the slot is that scarce.

Class Fit

  • Druid: Land Druids gain bonus circle spells by terrain; if Wall of Fire is already on the chosen terrain list, save the manual prep slot for something else. The concentration tag on Wall of Fire means a single failed Constitution save can end the effect mid-encounter.
  • Sorcerer: Quicken Spell turns an Action into a Bonus Action; if Wall of Fire costs an Action, Quicken opens a two-spell turn. Upcasting Wall of Fire changes the effect; the spell page lists the per-slot scaling.
  • Wizard: Wizards add Wall of Fire to the spellbook once and prepare it on the days that warrant it — a different decision from the class's known-spell competitors. Wall of Fire's concentration requirement makes it vulnerable to a single failed save when the caster takes damage.
