School Fit
Evocation is the school most players picture when they imagine spellcasting. It is also the school that puts the most decisions on the caster's plate per cast — area, angle, save type, friendly fire. Acid Splash is Evocation: the spell focuses magical energy into a visible, immediate effect. The cantrip slot on Acid Splash means the spell is always castable, regardless of remaining spell slots.
Class Fit
- Sorcerer: Quicken Spell turns an Action into a Bonus Action; if Acid Splash costs an Action, Quicken opens a two-spell turn. 60 feet is enough range that Acid Splash doesn't pull the caster forward.
- Wizard: On a Wizard sheet, Acid Splash competes for prep slot with Misty Step, Counterspell, Shield (a Reaction always worth prepping), Fireball, Polymorph, and the higher-tier wall and force spells. At 60 feet, Acid Splash stays usable from the caster's typical positioning.
Tactical play (Doungim editorial)
Two-target Dex save; 1d6 acid. The only multi-target damage cantrip on the Wizard list at level 1.
