Description

You point at a location within range, and a glowing, 1-foot- diameter ball of acid streaks there and explodes in a 20-foot-radius Sphere. Each creature in that area makes a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 10d4 Acid damage and another Sd4 Acid damage at the end of its next turn. On a successful save, a creature takes half the initial damage only.

At Higher Levels: The initial damage increases by 2d4 for each spell slot level above 4.

School Fit

Evocations are the most demanding spells to position. The same fireball that wins the fight from twenty feet up loses it from twenty feet down. Vitriolic Sphere is Evocation: the spell focuses magical energy into a visible, immediate effect. At level 4, Vitriolic Sphere sits in the high-mid slot range — tier-2 to early-tier-3 play.

Class Fit

  • Sorcerer: Quicken Spell turns an Action into a Bonus Action; if Vitriolic Sphere costs an Action, Quicken opens a two-spell turn. At 150 feet, Vitriolic Sphere stays usable from the caster's typical positioning.
  • Wizard: Arcane Recovery returns one or two slots on a short rest. Vitriolic Sphere's slot cost is therefore not exactly what the slot column says. The higher-level scaling on Vitriolic Sphere is described in the spell text; check it before upcasting.
