While holding the talisman and attempting to control a sphere of annihilation, the wielder makes the Intelligence (Arcana) check with double their proficiency bonus and treats failures as if they had rolled the threshold exactly, avoiding catastrophic consequences. Sphere-wielders without this talisman risk being consumed by their own weapon; with it, the artifact becomes nearly tame. Sphere-handlers across history have prized this talisman above their own lives, usually keeping it in a vault separate from the sphere itself for safety.
