Top 10 D&D 5e Forest Random Encounter Ideas

Ten ready-to-run forest encounter ideas for D&D 5e. Combat, mystery, and social hooks for any tier of play.

Forest encounters in D&D should feel old. The party isn't the first traveler down this path. Here are ten encounter ideas that capture that feeling — pulled from Doungim's 41-location encounter library at /dnd/encounters.

  1. 1.The talking deer

A stag with a polished antler asks the party for help finding its child. It's a polymorphed druid. The child is real.

  2. 2.The witch's tea ceremony

A clearing with a single set table. A crone is pouring tea for guests who haven't arrived. The party can join.

  3. 3.The buried camp

Smoke from beneath a fallen tree. Someone is camping in the hollow under it.

  4. 4.The hanging bandit

A bandit hanging from a tree by their ankles, alive, gagged. Someone left them as a warning.

  5. 5.The shrine of stones

Cairns marking graves — some fresh. The cairn-builder is watching from the trees.

  6. 6.The skin-changer

A traveler offers food at their fire. After dark, their shadow stretches the wrong way.

  7. 7.The forgotten waystation

A pre-built shelter with maps to nearby cities and a small sealed chest. The chest contains a letter from twenty years ago.

  8. 8.The treebark prophet

A nailed-up flier preaching against city life. The author is watching from a nearby branch.

  9. 9.The hunting horn

A horn blast from somewhere uphill. Repeats every ten minutes. The huntsman is closer each time.
