Every campaign needs reusable NPC archetypes — characters the DM can drop into a session with no prep. Here are ten that work in any setting.
- 1.The gruff barkeep
Knows every rumor in town but trades them only for repeat customers. Use Commoner or Veteran stat block.
- 2.The cynical city guard
Half-on-the-take. PCs can bribe past trouble or rally for a real crime. Guard stat block, +2 Persuasion proficiency.
- 3.The mysterious traveler
Knows things they shouldn't. Doesn't answer questions about themselves. Use Mage stat block for confrontation.

Information broker, knows the underworld. Owes one favor to the BBEG. Spy or Bandit Captain.
