Every campaign needs reusable NPC archetypes — characters the DM can drop into a session with no prep. Here are ten that work in any setting.

  1. 1.The gruff barkeep

Knows every rumor in town but trades them only for repeat customers. Use Commoner or Veteran stat block.

  2. 2.The cynical city guard

Half-on-the-take. PCs can bribe past trouble or rally for a real crime. Guard stat block, +2 Persuasion proficiency.

  3. 3.The mysterious traveler

Knows things they shouldn't. Doesn't answer questions about themselves. Use Mage stat block for confrontation.

  4. 4.The reformed thief

Information broker, knows the underworld. Owes one favor to the BBEG. Spy or Bandit Captain.

  5. 5.The retired adventurer

Used to be a level-12 paladin; now runs an orphanage. Veteran or Knight stat block, +healing spell list.

  6. 6.The court astrologer

A genuine seer trapped at an inept court. Mage with Augury and Divination spells.

  7. 7.The merchant prince

Owns three shipping lines. The party's biggest patron. Noble stat block, +5 Persuasion / Deception.

  8. 8.The cult lieutenant

Not the BBEG; the BBEG's second. Knows the plan. Hard to kill but easy to capture. Cult Fanatic stat block.

  9. 9.The childhood friend

A PC's NPC ally. Hooks into one player's backstory. Stat block matches their profession.

  10. 10.The shopkeeper sage

Sells potions and identifies magic items. Pretends not to know more. Commoner stat block, +Arcana / History expertise.
