Top 10 D&D 5e Tavern Random Encounter Ideas
Ten ready-to-run tavern hooks for D&D 5e. NPCs, side quests, and social drama for the start (or end) of any session.
The tavern is D&D's most-rolled location for a reason. Done well, a tavern scene plants a hook, a rumor, and a recurring NPC inside thirty minutes. Here are ten that punch above their weight.
- 1.The bardic contest
A nightly singing competition. Winner takes a purse and a slow embrace from the barmaid. PCs can compete.
- 2.The whisperer in the corner
A hooded figure pays the barkeep to deliver a sealed letter to "the party at the back table." The letter contains a job.
- 3.The marked drinker
A regular is sketched into the bar's ceiling — face only, no name. The portrait was added yesterday.
- 4.The grudge match
Two locals argue. PC arrival shifts the argument. By the end one of them has hired the party.
- 5.The dwarf with the leg
A scarred dwarf showing off a peg leg has the matching adventurer story for whatever the party is currently doing.
- 6.The thief on stage
A magician's show is cover for a pickpocket sweeping the audience. PCs can catch on or be caught.
- 7.The wager
Patrons bet on dice. The dice are weighted. The PC who catches the cheating becomes the new house champion.
- 8.The forgotten dish
A meal is brought to the wrong table. The intended recipient turns out to be someone PCs know.
- 9.The closed back room
The barkeep refuses to seat the party in a private back room. Eight men in matching colors emerge an hour later.
