Ecology
Ancient copper dragons make lairs in dry rocky hills, mesa caves, and labyrinths of natural arches they sculpt over centuries using stone shape and breath weapon. Their territories are riddled with hidden passages, false caverns, and acoustic tunnels that carry whispers for miles. They keep populations of tricksy creatures: kobolds, sprites, pixies, gremlins, less as servants and more as audience. Around their lairs, riddles and folklore proliferate among nearby villages; children grow up hearing copper-dragon parables. Travelers report finding inexplicable doors in cliff faces that lead to old jokes carved into stone.
Behaviour
They are tricksters, philosophers, and lovers of wit. An ancient copper will spend decades on a single elaborate prank, often one that benefits the victim by the end. They collect jokes, riddles, and clever stories more avidly than gold. They prefer to teach mortals, especially the arrogant, by humbling them theatrically. They are good at heart but selfish in time; they will help a hero only after the hero entertains them. They despise dullness and will let a dull party die rather than fight beside them. They forgive almost everything except being unfunny.
Origin
Coppers descend from a trickster-aspect of the metallic line, said to have been the favorite of a god of jokes who fell in love with a stone giant queen. Their wyrmlings hatch from eggs hidden in nests of stolen interesting objects: shiny rocks, lost wedding rings, an enemy's dropped sword. Most spend centuries building reputations as local legends before an ancient considers them peers. Their oldest are nameless or many-named, having outlived every culture that ever called them anything, and they collect their own past names as jokes about who they used to be.
