Ecology
Ancient gold dragons rule from hidden palaces atop mountains, in cloud-wrapped valleys, or in concealed planar pockets connecting forest to sky. They prefer to be myth rather than presence, allowing entire cultures to flourish under their watch without the cultures knowing. Their lairs are often kingdoms in miniature: sentient gardens, libraries staffed by friendly devas, courts of polymorphed friends. Around them, climate softens, droughts ease, plagues never quite take root. They shelter dozens of vassal species, from awakened animals to celestials in voluntary exile. To find a gold dragon's territory is to enter a place where the world is less cruel for reasons no one can name.
Behaviour
They are wise, patient, and quietly authoritative. Ancient golds rarely act in haste, often deliberating for weeks before responding to a request. They speak gently and treat mortals with deep respect, though they reserve final judgment to themselves. They love mortal art and music, attending operas in disguise for centuries. They also harbor old grief; they remember every death they could not prevent, and the weight bends them. They do not fight unless certain, but once committed, they fight to win. They are more dangerous than red dragons, simply quieter about it.
Origin
Golds are said to be the firstborn of the platinum father, hatched at the dawn of the metallic line and raised by celestials before the first humans walked the world. Many ancient golds remember the gods personally, having served as paladins or messengers in ages now mythologized. Their oldest are nearly divine themselves, and a few have ascended quietly to become aspects of mortal gods of justice. To meet an ancient gold is, in some traditions, to be granted a lifetime of luck for either being judged worthy or being permitted to leave.
