Ecology
Axe Beaks are flightless ratite predators — towering, fast, vicious — native to cold grasslands, tundra, and high hills. They run in flocks of 4–8 led by a senior female, hunting hares, fawns, and ground birds. Their feathers shed water; their feet are clawed and powerful. They are **incompatible with farming**: a flock can shred a flock of sheep in minutes. Frontier herders set snare-lines around night-pens.
Behaviour
Axe Beaks are **aggressive, territorial, and fearless** — they attack anything entering their range, including bears and orcs. They use kicks and pecks; their long necks make them surprisingly far-reaching opponents. They are not pack hunters in the wolf sense; each beak fights as an individual but pressures prey simultaneously. They flee only at half flock losses, and only if they have a chick to defend.
Origin
Naturalists believe Axe Beaks are descendants of the prehistoric terror-birds, surviving in northern latitudes where larger predators are absent. Goblins and hobgoblins occasionally tame chicks as **war mounts**, training them to charge in formation; a goblin warband mounted on axe beaks is a serious frontier threat. The eggs are prized: each yields enough yolk to feed a household for days, but raiding a nest invites a flock's full wrath.
