Ecology

Badgers are solitary or live in small family groups (clans) within elaborate underground setts spanning multiple chambers and exits. Omnivorous: earthworms, roots, beetles, small mammals, eggs. They're nocturnal in temperate forests and active by day in colder climes. A sett can be inherited across badger generations for over a century, with new tunnels added each year. They neither hibernate fully nor migrate.

Behaviour

Stubborn, territorial, and astonishingly aggressive when defending kits. A badger will face down a wolf or even a bear at the sett entrance. Otherwise placid and shy, avoiding humanoids. Grumbles, hisses, and emits a sharp musk when alarmed. Druids and rangers respect badgers as keepers of the deep root, and folk wisdom says a badger never forgets a dug grave.

Origin

Badgers are mundane beasts but feature heavily in halfling and shield-dwarf folklore. The Strongheart halflings of the Western Heartlands consider badgers tutelary spirits, and a halfling clan name 'Brockhollow' literally means 'badger-sett.' Druids of the Circle of Land (Forest) sometimes Wild Shape into badgers for the burrow access during sieges and infiltrations.
