Ecology

Bugbear stalkers are elite hunters within bugbear society, chosen for their stealth and ruthlessness. They lead small ambush parties in forests, hills, and underground passages, preferring isolated targets to large groups. They feed on ambushed travelers and game, hoarding trophies of past kills. They share territory with other goblinoids but rarely cooperate with non-bugbears unless ordered by a hobgoblin warlord. They typically live thirty years, though many die young from feuds or failed ambushes.

Behaviour

Stalkers are patient predators, willing to lie still for hours awaiting prey. They prefer ambush over open combat, striking from cover with overwhelming force. They take trophies, especially fingers and ears, decorating their bodies with gruesome tokens. They communicate via grunt-language and goblin tongue. They mock the dying, considering it sport. Among bugbears, stalkers are admired but feared, as they prey on weak kin during scarce seasons. They sleep in solitary nests of bone.

Origin

Bugbears are fey-touched goblinoids, descended from the same ancient race that produced goblins and hobgoblins. Stalkers emerge through ritual hunts, where promising young bugbears are tested against dangerous prey. Failures die; survivors return as full stalkers. Some sages claim bugbears were created by Maglubiyet's lieutenants during the goblin diaspora. Others argue they are ancient fey that fell from the Feywild during a war. Their stealth retains hints of fey grace.
