Ecology
The landshark, as folk call the Bulette, is an apex predator of grasslands and rocky hills, burrowing through soft soil at terrifying speed to ambush herds and travelers. Its diet is voracious: livestock, deer, the occasional adventurer, and notably never elves (which it finds distasteful) and dwarves (which give it indigestion). Its diamond-hard armor plating allows it to surface through stone with little resistance. It mates rarely, females laying clutches of three eggs in deep tunnels.
Behaviour
Solitary except during brief mating cycles, the Bulette stakes out vast territories marked by upturned earth and partially eaten remains. It hunts by tremorsense, sensitive to footfalls hundreds of feet away. It rarely retreats once committed to an attack, devouring prey whole if size permits, breaking bones and armor with serrated jaws. Its only fear is fire, which can pierce its armor at vulnerable joint plates between scales.
Origin
Wizardly experimentation gone awry created the Bulette, splicing snapping turtle, armadillo, shark, and giant tick traits into a hybrid predator intended as a war beast. The original wizards lost control of their breeding stock, and the creatures escaped into the wilds, multiplying. Modern Bulettes are entirely natural in behavior despite their constructed origin, occupying ecological niches that would otherwise belong to dragons or behir.
