Ecology
Camels are desert-adapted mammals — thick foot-pads, water-storing humps, salt-tolerant kidneys, eyelashes that block sand. They live in herds of 20–40 in arid regions, browsing thorny shrubs and tough grasses that other ungulates cannot digest. They drink huge quantities when water is available (up to 30 gallons in 13 minutes) and can go 10+ days without water in the worst heat. Domestic camels live closely with desert peoples.
Behaviour
Camels are **placid until annoyed**, then **memorably vindictive**. They bite, spit, and kick those who handle them poorly, and they remember offenders for years. With proper handlers they are loyal, calm, and capable of carrying heavy loads across distances no horse could match. They communicate through grunts, moans, and an extraordinary range of facial expressions. A well-treated camel will guide a lost rider home.
Origin
Camels are natural fauna, but desert nomads consider certain bloodlines **blessed** — descended from a camel that, legend says, carried a saint across an impossible desert without water. These bloodlines fetch huge prices and are inherited within families. Some genie-touched camels show unusual intelligence, even Wisdom; a camel that gives advice is a story told throughout the dunes.
