Ecology
Centaurs live in nomadic bands across forests, grasslands, and fey-touched meadows, herding deer, gathering wild grain, and trading with surface communities. A typical band numbers 15–50, led by a council of elders. They speak Sylvan and Common, plus the language of any neighboring civilized people. They are excellent hunters, decent farmers (in the lighter sense), and superb light cavalry — though they consider themselves people, not mounts.
Behaviour
Centaurs are **proud, ceremonial, and short-tempered with the discourteous**. They observe elaborate hospitality customs and offer escort to polite travelers. They take grave offense at attempts to ride or saddle them. In combat, they charge with pikes — exploiting their long stride for impact damage. Outside combat, they are storytellers, astronomers, and herbalists. Their music — sung in choirs around night-fires — is famous across border lands.
Origin
Centaurs are believed to descend from a fey pact between forest-spirits and the first horse-riders of a now-vanished plains people. Some sages dispute this, calling them their own ancient species. Either way, centaurs trace lineage through their mothers and remember names back twenty generations. Their grief-songs for fallen kin are known to make even hostile listeners weep. Many bands serve as protectors of fey woodlands.
