Ecology
Chimeras are the result of ancient draconic experimentation, blending lion, goat, and dragon traits into a single voracious predator. They inhabit mountainous regions where each head can find satisfying prey: goats for the goat head, deer for the lion, and large game for the dragon head. They are perpetually hungry, requiring three times the food of a comparable lion. Female Chimeras are rare; most populations grow through individual longevity rather than reproduction.
Behaviour
Each head behaves semi-independently, often arguing over targets and meals. The dragon head dominates strategy, the lion drives raw aggression, and the goat acts as a wary sentinel. They claim aerial territory marked by acidic spit (or fire-scorched, depending on parentage). They hate griffons and roc, viewing them as competitors. They tolerate evil dragon overlords, who sometimes recruit Chimeras as terror beasts in mountain raids.
Origin
Tales claim the first Chimera was created by Tiamat herself, or by ancient red dragon archmages, fusing creatures captured from a defeated mortal kingdom. Whatever the truth, Chimeras breed true, passing on their hybrid traits without dilution. Some scholars argue they are a stable magical species rather than a construct, citing their reproductive viability and intact instincts. Either way, their dragonheritage marks them as kin to wyverns and drakes.
