Ecology
Chuuls dwell in flooded ruins, swamp lairs, and aboleth-served waters, hunting in murky shallows. They feed on sentient prey, dragging victims to underwater lairs to feast. They are largely solitary, though aboleth-bound chuuls serve in groups under their masters' direction. They reproduce slowly, with rare aboleth-grown clutches in deep brood pools. They communicate via primitive aboleth-tongue, mostly relaying commands. They are immune to most poisons and disease, allowing them to thrive in foul waters.
Behaviour
Chuuls are aggressive ambushers, lurking in silt to strike at passing prey. They prefer to grab and submerge, using paralysis tentacles to subdue captives before consuming them slowly. They are methodical, not frenzied, ensuring each kill yields maximum nourishment. They sense magic and hoard magical items at the bottom of their lairs, presenting them to their aboleth masters. They do not respect non-aboleth authority and ignore mortal demands. They live for several centuries.
Origin
Chuuls were created by aboleths in their ancient slave breeding pools, designed as guardians and treasure-collectors. Aboleths consider them favored servants but also expendable. After the great aboleth fall, many chuuls were abandoned and became feral, hunting independently. They retain a vestigial loyalty to aboleths, recognizing the species's mental dominance instinctively. Modern chuuls in flooded sewers and ruins are often these forgotten guardians, still tending vanished masters' empty thrones.
