Ecology

Crocodiles inhabit rivers, swamps, and mangrove deltas across temperate and tropical regions, basking on banks during the day to absorb heat for nocturnal hunting. They are apex ambush predators, taking fish, birds, mammals, and any unwary creature that approaches the water's edge. They can hold their breath for an hour, allowing patient submerged stalks. Mothers guard nests of buried eggs fiercely until hatching, then carry hatchlings in their jaws to nursery pools.

Behaviour

The crocodile is patient, motionless, and explosive when it strikes. It learns the routines of villages near its waters, timing ambushes to laundry days or watering schedules. It has no pack instinct but tolerates rivals at large kills. Older crocodiles become cunning, choosing prey based on size and resistance, and avoiding settlements that have killed their kin.

Origin

Crocodiles are ancient creatures, virtually unchanged since the dawn ages of the world. Some druidic traditions hold them sacred, believing they ferry souls across the river between life and death. In certain swamps, lizardfolk venerate enormous specimens as physical manifestations of their reptilian gods, leaving offerings of meat and gold along the muddy banks where the largest specimens lurk.
