Ecology
Devas are the messenger-knights of the upper planes, dispatched from Mount Celestia to investigate, judge, and occasionally intervene in mortal affairs. They do not eat or sleep in the mortal sense, sustained by the radiance of their home plane, though they may share food in courtesy. They appear in pairs or alone, never in armies, because each deva is considered a moral instrument too valuable to risk in massed combat.
Behaviour
Devas are gentle in manner but uncompromising in principle. They speak softly, listen carefully, and act with sudden decisiveness when conviction is reached. They do not lie, even strategically, and find mortal compromise distasteful but tolerable. Among themselves they engage in long debates about doctrine, which can take centuries to resolve. They are fond of music, particularly hymns composed by mortals out of genuine grief.
Origin
Devas are believed to be the first ascended souls of the most virtuous mortals, those who reached Mount Celestia through pure deeds rather than faith. Some theologians argue devas were always celestial, made before mortals as the instruments of divine justice. The truth depends on which deity is asked, and devas themselves rarely answer the question, considering it a distraction from the work of righteousness.
