Ecology
Draft horses are domesticated beasts bred for strength, patience, and stamina rather than speed. They live wherever humanoids cultivate fields, haul barges, or operate mills, and free populations exist near abandoned farmsteads. Their diet is grass, oats, and root vegetables. They are social herd animals, bonding strongly with stable-mates and showing distress when separated for long periods.
Behaviour
Draft horses are placid by nature, accepting bridles, harnesses, and heavy loads without complaint. They spook at fire, predators, and loud magic, sometimes bolting through crowded streets when startled. A well-trained draft horse trusts its handler implicitly and may return to a familiar stable from miles away. They are not combat trained and panic in battle, often becoming hazards rather than mounts.
Origin
Draft horse breeds were developed over centuries by patient breeders in lowland kingdoms, selected from wild horse stock for size and tractability. Some breeds carry rumored bloodlines from celestial steeds, accounting for their occasional unusual height. They are now the backbone of any agricultural or commercial society, valued at prices far higher than war horses for their working life.
