Ecology
Dust mephits dwell in dry tombs, abandoned mines, dust-storm wastelands, and the elemental Plane of Air's arid borderlands. They feed on grit, ash, and the occasional snack of carrion. They breed in still, sealed chambers where dust accumulates, hatching from grit-pillars when conditions allow. A single sealed crypt may host a dozen mephits within a century of being sealed against air circulation.
Behaviour
Dust mephits are spiteful, sneezing, and chatty, gossiping incessantly in Auran and Common. They love practical jokes that involve coughing fits and ruined banquets. They serve more powerful elementals out of fear and resentment, and betray their masters at the first opportunity. They flee bright wet environments, where their dust dissolves and weakens them, and prefer dim sealed spaces where their breath can blind effectively.
Origin
Dust mephits are minor elemental spirits born from the meeting of earth and air on the Inner Planes. They embody the dryness, decay, and choking grit of forgotten places. Some are summoned by lazy wizards to clean libraries, but the mephits invariably make the dust worse, scattering it artistically rather than removing it. Sealed crypts often become unintended mephit breeding grounds within centuries.
