Ecology
Earth Elementals are dense aggregates of stone, soil, and minerals from the Elemental Plane of Earth, summoned to the Material Plane through ancient pacts or accidental rifts. They have no biological needs, sustained by the bedrock itself, and require no air, food, or rest. Free Earth Elementals tend to settle into mountainsides or tunnel networks, becoming part of the terrain. Their slow, considered movements take centuries between actions in their home plane.
Behaviour
Stoic and ponderous, Earth Elementals communicate in tectonic groans audible only through stone. They obey summoners faithfully but lack creative initiative. Free elementals defend territory passively, only striking when intruders disturb their resting place or extract minerals. They view dwarves and gnomes with grudging respect, recognizing kin spirit, and despise miners who strip mountains without ceremony.
Origin
Said to have formed during the primordial age when the Elemental Plane of Earth condensed from chaos, Earth Elementals are perhaps the oldest non-deity beings in existence. Some are the bound spirits of mountains slain by gods, others fragments of the dao genie nobles. Powerful clerics of earth gods (Grumbar, Geb, Ogremoch) summon them as guardians of holy sites, sometimes for millennia.
