Ecology
Elk inhabit forested hills, mountain meadows, and grassland margins across temperate climates. Bulls grow massive antlers each spring and shed them in late winter, fighting rivals during autumn rut. Cows lead matriarchal herds of calves and yearlings, while bulls form bachelor groups outside of mating season. They graze on grasses, browse on shrubs, and migrate seasonally between high and low ranges.
Behaviour
Elk are wary and swift, fleeing humans and predators at the first sign. During rut, bulls become belligerent and unpredictable, charging anything that approaches their harem. The bugle-call of a rutting bull carries for miles. They are excellent swimmers and can cross rivers without difficulty. Calves stay close to their mothers for the first six months, hidden in tall grass when the herd grazes nearby.
Origin
Elk have populated temperate ranges since the world's youth, evolving alongside the great forests. Many woodland cultures revere them as totems of stamina and family. The Horned Father, a primal spirit honored by certain druid circles, is depicted as an enormous elk whose antlers cradle the moon. Elk antler is considered sacred material, fashioned into divine focuses and ritual instruments.
