Ecology
Erinyes, sometimes called fallen valkyries, are the elite hunters of the Nine Hells, dispatched to enforce contracts and recover deserter souls. They live in fortress-prisons in the upper layers of Hell, training between hunts. They feed on the despair of those they recover and on the slow corruption of mortals they pursue. Their numbers are limited; each erinyes is irreplaceable, and Asmodeus values them above battalions.
Behaviour
Erinyes are formal, melancholic, and relentless. They speak before they kill, reciting the contract violated. They take no joy in the chase but pride in flawless execution. Among devils they are nearly silent, considered tragic figures even by lemures. Toward mortals they are courteous before lethal, willing to grant a stay of execution if doing so brings two souls instead of one. They keep journals of every contract enforced.
Origin
Mortal myth holds that erinyes were once celestials, valkyries who fell when they pitied the wrong soul or loved across the boundary. Hell's official record states they are bred-to-purpose from solar-grade devil stock. The truth is contested, but erinyes themselves, in rare confessional moments, suggest both stories are partially true. The longbow each carries was a gift, or a weight, given on the day of falling, and is tied to its bearer's identity.
