Ecology
Flying snakes live in tropical jungles, deserts, and warm urban gardens, gliding on rib-fanned wings between perches. They hunt small birds, lizards, and large insects, striking with venomous bites and devouring prey while perched. They lay eggs in tree hollows or under sun-warmed eaves. Their bright scales serve as warning to predators that their bite is potent and their meat distasteful.
Behaviour
The flying snake is curious, fast, and difficult to catch. It investigates novel sights with cocked head and flicking tongue, retreating at the first hostile movement. In urban environments it grows accustomed to handlers, becoming an exotic pet for nobles and wizards. Wild specimens are skittish, attacking only when cornered or guarding eggs. Their venom is rarely lethal to humans but causes painful swelling.
Origin
Flying snakes are likely the natural product of evolution in jungle canopies, where gliding allows them to hunt without descending to the floor. Some sages, however, claim they are the descendants of magical experiments in a fallen serpent empire, where mages bred winged messengers. Their intelligence does seem unusually high for a beast, supporting the theory of a created origin diluted across generations.
