Ecology
Ghasts inhabit graveyards, catacombs, abandoned villages, and battlefield mass graves alongside their ghoul broods. They hunger for living flesh more intensely than ghouls and require regular feeding to maintain their form. Their stench-aura kills smaller scavengers nearby, turning their lairs into zones of perfect undead silence. A ghast may rule a small ghoul pack as a corpse-king, directing them to drag prey into shared feeding pits.
Behaviour
The ghast is more intelligent than the ghoul, capable of basic strategy and leadership. It commands ghouls through hisses and clicks, directing them to surround paralyzed prey while it harasses spellcasters. It remembers the faces of those who escape, holding grudges across years of waiting in the dark. It can speak in halting Common, croaking out names of past victims to terrorize relatives in the night.
Origin
Ghasts are ghouls who have fed long enough on intelligent flesh to retain their cunning. Each ghast was once a human, elf, or other humanoid whose hunger drove it to eat the dead, becoming a ghoul, and then to feast on so many that its corruption deepened. They retain fragments of memory and speech, making them more dangerous and more pitiable than common ghouls.
