Ecology
Giant badgers dig extensive tunnel systems beneath hillside meadows, woodland edges, and abandoned farms. They eat roots, insects, small mammals, and carrion, foraging primarily at night. Their burrows feature multiple entrances, sleeping chambers, latrines, and food caches. A breeding pair raises two to four cubs each spring, defending the den with ferocity. They live ten to fifteen years in the wild, longer when undisturbed.
Behaviour
The giant badger is solitary, grumpy, and territorial. It tolerates a mate only during breeding season and even then only sometimes. It is courageous to a fault, willing to fight bears and direwolves rather than yield its burrow. Druids find them surprisingly companionable once trust is earned, though never tame. They communicate through scent-marking and low growls audible through earth.
Origin
Giant badgers are simply oversized natural badgers, products of long generations adapting to abundant food and few predators in fey-touched forests. Some traditions claim they were created by a fey gnomish king who needed mounts; the badgers grew large and never shrank back. They breed true now, an established species of their own, and are sometimes domesticated by gnomish riders for woodland patrols.
