Ecology
Giant bats roost in cave systems, abandoned belfries, and ruined towers, hanging in colonies of dozens. They emerge at dusk to hunt large insects, small birds, and rodents, using echolocation to navigate complete darkness. Their guano accumulates in massive piles below roosts, supporting underground ecosystems of beetles and fungus. A colony may number in the hundreds, terrifying nearby villagers when stirred.
Behaviour
The giant bat is skittish, easily startled into mass-flight by light, smoke, or loud noise. It hunts efficiently but lacks aggression toward larger creatures unless its roost is invaded. Mothers carry pups in flight for the first weeks, dropping them only to teach them to fly. They communicate through high-frequency clicks indistinguishable from echolocation, conveying mood, hunger, and warning.
Origin
Giant bats evolved in cavern systems where bountiful insect prey allowed them to grow enormous. Some druidic circles claim that giant bats were once normal bats blessed by the Bat Mother, a primal cave spirit, in exchange for guarding sacred underground chambers. Whether by magic or nature, they breed true and have stable populations across most subterranean and twilight-dwelling regions of the world.
