Ecology
Giant crabs scuttle along rocky coastlines, tide pools, brackish estuaries, and shallow reefs. They scavenge carrion, hunt fish, and ambush birds at the water's edge. They molt several times during their growth, leaving abandoned shells that wash ashore as macabre beach treasures. They breed in the open sea, and the young drift as plankton before settling on coastal rocks to grow into the giant adults.
Behaviour
The giant crab is reclusive, sliding sideways into rock crevices when threatened. It feeds primarily at night and during low tide, exposing itself only briefly. It is not aggressive unless cornered or grabbed. Multiple crabs at a tide pool tolerate each other but will fight over a fresh corpse. Their amphibious nature makes them difficult to escape; they pursue prey both in and out of water without slowing.
Origin
Giant crabs are simply enormous specimens of their species, growing especially large in nutrient-rich coastal zones near river mouths and reef systems. Some coastal communities claim particularly enormous crabs are sacred to the Sea Mother, leaving offerings of fish at low tide. Their meat is delicious but their shells are heavy enough to feed a village, and a single giant crab can supply a wedding feast.
