Ecology
Giant elk roam temperate forests and high meadows, grazing on radiant moss and fey-touched ferns whose dew gleams faintly silver. They migrate between summer pastures in alpine valleys and winter shelters in deep oak groves, traveling in herds of three to twelve. A bull's antler rack regrows each spring, the velvet sloughing in luminous strips that fey beings collect for spell components. They drink only from blessed or pristine springs.
Behaviour
Giant elk are stately and proud, communicating among themselves with low bell-tones audible for miles. They tolerate non-violent travelers but charge any creature carrying iron weapons across their migration paths. Bulls duel for mates with thunderous antler-clashes that can shake the ground. They are protective of mortal druids and rangers who treat the wild with respect, sometimes leading lost travelers to safety. They despise hunters and undead.
Origin
Lore holds that the first giant elk was the celestial steed of a forest god, escaping into the Material Plane after a great cataclysm shattered its master's realm. Their radiant antlers are said to remember the light of that lost upper world. Druidic circles tell that each giant elk carries a spark of the original mount's soul, reborn through generations of the herd. Killing one is taboo in Sylvan culture.
