Ecology
Giant goats inhabit mountain ridges, alpine meadows, and rocky uplands above the treeline. They graze on tough grasses, lichens, and the salt that crusts at high mineral springs. A herd numbers six to twenty animals led by an older nanny rather than a bull, who bears the herd's collective memory of safe trails and predator territories. They are crepuscular, moving most actively at dawn and dusk.
Behaviour
Giant goats are stubborn, territorial, and surprisingly intelligent for an unaligned beast. They head-butt rivals, predators, and unwary travelers from cliff ledges with calculated precision. Bucks duel for breeding rights with full-charge ram contests that can be heard for miles. They tolerate dwarves, who often herd them, and despise wolves and worgs. They are sure-footed on near-vertical surfaces and use rockfalls defensively.
Origin
Mountain dwarves and goliaths claim the first giant goat was carved from a mountain by a stone giant who needed company on a lonely peak. Druidic lore counters that the species predates civilization, descended from primordial caprine spirits called from the Astral Sea. Whatever the truth, every mountain culture has tales of a wise old giant goat who guards a hidden pass and demands tribute in salt.
