Ecology
Giant poisonous snakes thrive in hot, humid environments: jungles, swamps, urban sewers, and underground rivers. They feed on rodents, birds, monkeys, and small humanoids, hunting by ambush from low branches or shallow water. Females are larger and more venomous, laying clutches of two dozen eggs in concealed nests of leaves. They shed monthly, leaving telltale skins draped on tree limbs. They tolerate cold poorly.
Behaviour
Giant poisonous snakes are unaligned, instinct-driven predators. They strike from concealment, retreat after envenomation, and follow scent trails to where the poison fells the prey. They are territorial within a half-mile radius and aggressive toward rivals. They climb readily and swim well. They flee fire, loud noise, and any creature larger than themselves. They have no social bonds beyond brief mating coils.
Origin
Most giant poisonous snakes are products of magical convergence: ordinary snakes growing oversized in regions of high ambient magic, near ley lines or fey wells. Yuan-ti cultivate them in temple terraria as guardians and venom sources. Older snake-cults claim descent from a primal serpent-god whose first venom became their species, and each giant venomous snake carries a drop of that ancient toxin in its glands.
