Ecology
Giant sea horses graze coral reefs, kelp forests, and seagrass meadows in temperate and tropical seas. They prey on small fish, shrimp, and plankton sucked through their tubular snouts. Males carry the eggs in pouches, releasing live fry after a long gestation. Herds of six to twenty animals form, led by a dominant stallion. They are ridden by triton, merfolk, and sea-elf cavalry as sturdy aquatic mounts.
Behaviour
Giant sea horses are gentle by default but ferocious in defense of brood. Stallions ram intruders that approach pouches in straight charges. They communicate through low clicking pulses and color-changing skin patterns. They form deep bonds with merfolk riders, recognizing individuals by song. They are unaligned but lean toward neutral good when raised by sea-folk. They despise sharks and giant octopuses, their natural rivals.
Origin
Sea-elf myth credits a sea-god's tear, fallen into a coral reef during a storm, with quickening the first giant sea horse from an ordinary specimen. Triton legend places the origin in a Plane of Water decree: the first sea horse was a herald of Persana, growing larger to carry his message to mortal seas. Both lineages claim them as sacred mounts unworthy of slaughter.
