Ecology
Giant seahorses inhabit tropical reefs, mangrove roots, and warm tidal lagoons. They drift among coral spires, anchoring to outcroppings with prehensile tails and feeding on plankton and shrimp. Like their kin, males brood the eggs in belly pouches. They form smaller, looser herds than the temperate Giant Sea Horse, often pairing rather than schooling. They are diurnal grazers and become lethargic in cold currents.
Behaviour
Giant seahorses are docile, almost fey-like in their gentle curiosity. They approach divers without fear and can be hand-fed by patient merfolk. Stallions defend brood with the same straight-line ram as their cousins but rarely pursue retreating threats. They communicate through a slow clicking song that triton find soothing and use in lullabies. They are pacifist by nature and resort to charging only when broods are at risk.
Origin
Coastal merfolk claim the first giant seahorse was a gift from a sea-fey patron in exchange for a song. Aquatic druids note the species shares deep bloodlines with the temperate Giant Sea Horse, suggesting a single common ancestor that diverged into tropical and temperate forms millennia ago. Sahuagin myths, by contrast, name them as cowards' steeds, descended from a sea-god's broken oath.
